Before Your Tires Touch Your New Polyaspartic Floor Coating, Know This

You finally upgraded your garage floor. It looks sharp, clean, and ready for daily use. But if the coating underneath your tires is not built correctly, the first time you park your car can start the damage process. Hot tire transfer is one of the leading causes of early coating failure. A professionally installed polyaspartic floor coating is designed to stop it before it starts.

Why Hot Tires Cause More Damage Than You Expect

Many 1-day garage floor coatings rely on thin polyurea or polyaspartic layers to create the system, the first of which is applied direct-to-concrete. Bad idea! Because these coatings cure so quickly (< 1 hour), they fail to deeply penetrate the concrete, making them susceptible to future moisture-related damage. In addition, in these “1-day” systems, the final, single polyaspartic top coat is almost never 100%-solids (and possesses substandard cross-linking).

Why is this a problem?

Car tires contain plasticizers that keep rubber flexible. As tires heat up during driving, these compounds migrate to the surface. Once parked, those plasticizers transfer into the poor quality topcoat of the garage floor coating system. Over time, this leads to discoloration, surface softening, and eventual coating breakdown. (This is why many “1-day” installers don’t warrant for this type of staining; some even suggest vehicle pads!!)

Hot tire transfer is not just cosmetic. It is often an early sign the system is failing.

Why a 2-Day Polyaspartic Floor Coating System Lasts Longer

At Garage Floor Coating of Michigan, we install a 2-day system because lasting performance starts with proper preparation and layering.

Day one begins with mechanical grinding to prepare the concrete surface. A high-build, moisture-mitigating, 100%-solids epoxy base coat is applied and allowed to fully cure. This acts as a moisture vapor barrier that protects the system from future moisture-related issues. A full flake broadcast is embedded into this base layer for strength and durability.

On day two, not one, but two 100%-solids polyaspartic topcoats create a dense, durable surface that resists heat, pressure, and chemical exposure.

Built to Withstand Seasonal Extremes

A high-quality, 100%-solids polyaspartic floor coating creates a UV-stable barrier that prevents hot tire pickup and holds up through Michigan’s changing seasons.

From summer heat to winter conditions, your garage floor needs a system that performs year-round.

Before your tires touch your new floor, make sure it is built to last.
